What does it mean if my doctor is a FABNG?

Doctors with this title are naturopathic doctors (NDs or NMDs) trained in both natural and traditional treatments for digestive issues.

What is required to become a FABNG?

First, all FABNGs must graduate from an accredited 4+ year professional program with a doctoral degree in Naturopathic Medicine and then pass the national licensing board exams.

Second, prior to applying to become a FABNG, these doctors must prove that they have completed a gastroenterology-focused residency, or have overseen a minimum of 1800 gastroenterology patient contact hours. That’s a lot of exposure!

Third, applicants to the Fellowship are required to submit clinical cases to a board of experts who grade their clinical thinking based on a rigorous set of criteria. If approved, NDs are permitted to sit for the board exam.

If an applicant has passed their exam and has met the stringent criteria required by the Board, they are admitted as a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Gastroenterology.

What can you expect having a FABNG as your doctor?

Having a FABNG as your doctor means you can expect them to have the highest level of knowledge in integrative gastroenterology. You can expect them to help with a broad range of digestive complaints, ranging from liver disease, to Crohn’s, to complex microbiome imbalances.

Having a FABNG as your doctor ensures you benefit from their extensive expertise in integrative gastroenterology. They possess the highest level of knowledge in addressing a wide array of digestive concerns. Expect them to be well-versed in both conventional treatment options for digestive disorders and natural remedies backed by rigorous scientific data.

FABNGs are your top-tier integrative digestive experts!

What makes FABNG’s different than other GI providers?

The GastroANP fellowship was created to distinguish Naturopathic Doctors (ND or NMD) with an additional focus on the field of naturopathic gastroenterology. They are educated in approaches to digestive health that include naturopathic principles, including treating the cause and treating the whole person. This is not the same as specialist training overseen by the American Board of Medical Specialties that certifies other physicians as gastroenterologists.

By becoming a FABNG, each provider understands it is their duty to check their local and state regulations regarding terminology that may be used in reference to this certification. We encourage Fellows to refer to themselves as Fellows of the American Board of Naturopathic Gastroenterology.
